  1. Objectives and Mechanics

Objective: The mount is about control. Your opponent should be feeling as if there is no way out. Beginners make the mistake that the mount is for submissions and usually rush to get an armbar or choke. They lose control and the person escapes. Control first then submissions.

Mechanics: finding the middle. Your opponents power comes from their hips and their shoulders. You want to be in the middle and have your knees pinched and hips slightly disconnected. If you sit on your partners hips and posture all the way up you will get bumped off mount quickly.

Secret Tip: The most common mount escapes rely on your partner being able to turn their head and do a hip escape. If they are not able to freely turn their head they are mostly likely not able to escape.

2. Execution and Awareness

Execution: This is where things gets harder. Your partner’s job is to disturb your base. They want to off balance you. If you can do a good job of maintaining equal weight distribution in your base and moving towards a high mount than you are winning. Your partner will get tired.

Awareness: You have to be just as aware of what you are doing as what your partner is try doing. To have a good mount you need to be aware of two important things. First, that your hip bone does connect to your partners. You will get bucked off. Secondly, your hip bone does not pass your knee cap or you will fly over the top.

3. How to Train

How to practice mount: You should be feeling the difference between what is right and what is wrong at the basic level.

  1. Sit on your partners hips and let them bridge you. This is wrong.

  2. Find the middle (hips disconnected) and get your partner to bridge you. You shouldn’t be moving too much.

  3. Find the middle and place your weight in your hips as your partner bridges. You should feel like a rock to them and you shouldn’t go anywhere.

4. Dealing with common reactions

Pushing your chest with both hands

This is a common reactions for beginners. They want to stop you from getting close to them and get you posturing up. If you maintain your weight distribution and posture they will not be able to move you. If you are more confident you can use this opportunity for an armbar.

Defending their neck

This is a common reaction for beginners and intermediates students. They are aware that if they leave their arms up it can lead to armbars and chokes. So they try to protect everything. This is easy to deal with. You can either progress to high mount or apply the Americana.

Trying to roll away

Your partner might try to elbow escape or roll away. By restricting your partners ability to turn their head freely it shuts down their ability to hip escape. You can also allow your partner to roll onto their side and transition to a technical mount.

5. Invisible Jiu-Jitsu

You don’t have to technical mount: When you are in the middle and your opponent tries to roll away you don’t need to transition to a technical mount. You can let them roll right into the back mount. This involves being able to move in base.
