Escaping Back Control

There is a 'good side' and a 'death side', dictated by where their arms are: fall to the opposite side of the choking arm. The Journey Score data shows most students struggle escaping back control — the mechanics below fix that.

1. Objectives & Mechanics

The back escape needs connection — being one solid unit. Mistakes happen when you don't frame with your leg, move only your head, or fail to drive from leg to shoulder. Keep your leg straight and move it backwards past your opponent's hooks; it frees your hands for defence.

2. Execution & Awareness

Invisible jiu-jitsu is the correct application of weight distribution and connection — done right, your partner is confused about what's happening. Fall to the safe side, rotate your hips to the ceiling and nail your shoulder to the mat. This needs to become a quick reflex.

3. Invisible details — the belly down escape

When your partner drags you toward the death side: tuck your elbow to your knee, step your leg over to lift your hip and go belly down, then thread the needle to escape. You can practise it in your warm-up.

4. How to practice

Find a partner who feeds reactions — not someone trying to win the ADCC Open. Practise leg frames and driving your back to the ground; turning hips skyward and nailing the shoulder; denying the death-side fall; and defending their mount transition once your back hits the floor.

Drills

  • Leg frame + drive: back to the floor solo
  • Partnered: fall to the safe side
  • Safe side → hips to ceiling → shoulder nailed (build the reflex)
  • Defend the mount transition

Training checklist

  • You can escape back control against someone at your level
  • You can escape back control against a higher belt
  • You feel confident escaping back control

Frequently asked questions

Which side do I escape back control to?

The safe side — opposite the choking arm. The over-the-top arm marks where they want to take you.

Why does my back escape fail?

Usually: no leg frame, moving only your head, or not driving from leg to shoulder as one unit.

What is the belly down escape?

Elbow to knee, step the leg over to lift your hip, go belly down and thread the needle out.
